Have you checked your shutdown sequence. My experience is a process 
fails to shutdown thus creating a hang during the shutdown sequence 
preventing the final signal for power-off from being triggered. 
Unfortunately your screen blanks.  Try switching to a terminal from GUI:

ctrl+alt=F[1-5]

#login:[username]
#[enter password]

from here issue the shutdown command manually:

# shutdown -h now

You may need to sudo the shutdown command.

hopefully this will allow you to see the shutdown sequence and where the 
system may be hanging.  Once identified the community should be able to 
help move things along.
