You should take a look at ~/.xsession-errors when it's happening again.
What happens if you run K3b in Xfce4 terminal by the same command you
use by the menu entry? You can see it e.g. using Alacarte.

Likely it's

k3b %U

or similar and some odd messages are "normal".

I'm using it on Xfce Arch Linux without issues, but it doesn't even
detect a media, if I run it on Debian KDE.
