With 12.04, that is, because we will want to support people with no PAE
support. 14.04 will get the hardware enablement stacks.

Incorrect. There is no reason why you couldn't run Xubuntu on a modern
machine. There's also no reason why it wouldn't be faster than Ubuntu in
majority of the cases.

Those who run modern hardware can upgrade to 14.04 in a few months in
any case.
