How about taking a look at log files first?
E.g.
$ grep EE /var/log/Xorg.0.log
$ dmesg
$ cat $HOME/.xsession-errors
$ sudo cat /var/log/lightdm/lightdm.log
$ sudo cat /var/log/lightdm/x-0-greeter.log
$ sudo cat /var/log/lightdm/x-0-greeter.log
or what ever seems to be useful for troubleshooting.
