For example, assumed you've got an integrated Radeon X 1250.

then you need to install ATI Catalyst 9.3.
Take a look at

Catalyst < 12.10 needs X < 1.13

For old NVIDIA cards there aren't such issues with the proprietary
driver.

FWIW I own old NVIDIA and ATI cards, I speak from experience.
