[xubuntu-users] Useless notification items / printer messages

For reasons I don't see, the printer icon is visible in my 14.04
notification tray, with a red circle and exclamation point, but when I
click on it (left or right), nothing happens.

What good is that and how do I make it go away?

If I bring up Printers from the System Settings window, it shows me
the messages but won't let me delete them.

Same question.
