I would create a xorg.conf in /etc/X11/, but you also could create an
e.g. no-screen-blanking.conf in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/, _not_
in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d, the files in /usr/share/ likely are
unused examples.

Don't add it to an existing file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/. If you
use /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/, then create a new file, foo.conf, e.g.
no-screen-blanking.conf. It's a matter of taste if you split all your
needs in several files located in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ or if you put
something or everything in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
