It might be worth adding that this has been a sporadically-recurring 
problem for several releases back as far as Hardy and maybe further. 
There is something unstable about the NM code (or its origins?) that 
makes it just vanish off the panel irretrievably for no obvious reason. 
It's also not unique to Ubuntu: I remember the same happening in Red Hat 
and early Fedora (and that might not even have been NM, but perhaps it 
shared some code). The problem is that it is irregular and 
unpredictable, so it is not replicable, and therefore cannot be found or 
caught, which is probably why it can't been fixed.
