Synaptic Package Manager is a front-end for apt, aka Advanced Packaging
Tool.

Is there any evidence for your claim that the *buntu repos are the
largest repos? Are you aware that Debian and Ubuntu split software from
upstream to several packages? Another distro could have less packages,
but anyway provide more software than Ubuntu does, when they don't split
the software from upstream to several packages. In addition I guess
you're speaking o binary packages only and you seem to ignore port
based/like management of software.

Why do you consider the .deb based package handling by those tools as
the best? The best I know (I don't claim that it's the best) is the
package management Arch Linux does use and the tools for it. I build
many packages for both, Debian/Ubuntu and Arch Linux and my experiences
are different to yours, while I agree that Synaptic is a good tool,
don't get me wrong, I'm only allergic against claims that something
should be the best and that a distro that split packages should provide
more software than other distros should do, when there are no evidences
for it. It might be true, I never counted the provided software.

Regards,
Ralf
