Apparently there isn't a way to get Thunderbird to use a nice
application chooser like you get when right-clicking a file in File
Manager but you can get it to give you one more choice in addition to
the default. If you follow Elfy's suggestion and locate gimp and then
actually open the attachment one time with Gimp, Thunderbird will retain
that second "Open with" choice. So the next time, you would have
Ristretto, Gimp and Other to pick from. Picking another app; e.g.,
gThumb, won't add a third choice, it just replaces the second one
unfortunately.
