Thanks Joshua,

This could be where I'm going wrong.

I do had gvfs installed and ctl+l simply highlights the address that 
appears in Thunar's address bar. If I enter 10.0.0.9 nothing happens, so 
I must be entering the address in the wrong place.

Nautilus looks more promising. If I enter 10.0.0.9 into the server box 
under "connect to server" I'm eventually told that "ssh program 
unexpectedly exited".

Isn't Samba a tool to access Windows PCs rather than PCs running under 
Linux?

I don't have a real need to network the two laptops but there have been 
times when it would be handy to transfer a file without messing around 
with USB sticks.
