Check the disk for errors on next reboot:
touch /forcefsck
If the problem carries on check for errors in the logs in /var/log/fsck
- hopefully there should be something providing an indication of what
the problem is. From the sound of it, it seems you haven't even got past
grub - try reinstalling grub:
sudo grub-install /dev/sdX
where X is your disk (you can find out more about disks by running fdisk
-l) , and then
sudo update-grub.
Hope this helps somewhat
