I don't like thunar anyway, so I installed nautilus and called it thunar:

sudo ln -sf /usr/bin/nautilus /usr/bin/thunar

Now my new thunar has the option of displaying two panes, for example.
(you can't uninstall thunar without removing other important packages...)
