Actually, I'm not entirely sure.  When I looked it up in Synaptic, it
said fglrx was not installed.

I installed the latest version, which is 2:8.960-0ubuntu1, and it
shows in lsmod as

fglrx                3263886  157

The problem still occurs, though I haven't logged out or rebooted....
