[xubuntu-users] DVD/CD issues

I am a recent Xubuntu OS user from the Windows world, need media help!  I can't play a DVD except in Parole, VLC doesn't recognize my external Lite-On DVD/CD player.  Plus, I can't seem to figure out how to rip a CD to MP3.  I have looked at the forums and followed a lot of threads, done the actions - no result.  No mounting, and when I try to download Medibuntu via the terminal there is always an error message.
