When I press Alt+F2, the little dialog box opens up but I cannot type anything into it.
Anything else we could try?

Also the 'minimize', 'enlarge' and 'close' tabs on this browser window do not serve their purpose anymore, also the dock does not show when I move the mouse cursor over it when I have an application open. When I open an application the windows goes over the top system bar, etc etc. All this is a serious impairment in terms of the work I need to do.

Does Alt+F2 work?
If it does, Alt+F2, xfwm4 should fix this. If it fails to, try
The majority of the time, if xfsettingsd failed to run, you will have a
light grey theme only. It will not be the normal theme and is quite
obvious that it changed.
