Xubuntu has been fine for me on an nvidia video card - Seamonkey, google Chrome, 
Opera and Firefox. I've had no problems at all over 18 months.

I did have a problem when i ran two desktops... did you install the meta package 
or clean CD install. That's all i can suggest.
