Did you reply to the previous message and just change the topic and
contents?   Some (most?) mail clients will retain the information
about what thread the reply belongs to if you don't start a completely
new message.

Likewise, some mail clients will blindly lump all messages claiming to
belong to a thread together.  The net result is that it looks like you
hijacked his previous message (ie, it looks like you just replied to
his message to ask your own question) to ask about geany instead of
creating a new thread.
