[xubuntu-users] The Network Manager applet has vanished from the top panel in Ubuntu 8.10

please add sudo in front of the command.

sudo ifup eth0
sudo ifup eth1

Then use the "ipconfig" or " ip addr show" to check whether your ethernet is
up.
