I'm a dedicated startx user. I don't like any graphic anything getting in
my way until I type startx. So of course with *ubuntu this isn't always
easy.
Once upon a time this combo used to work...:
update-rc.d -f gdm remove
update-rc.d gdm stop 20 2 3 4 5 .
With Xubuntu Karmic it was necessary to apt-get remove gdm
When I upgraded to Lucid it put GDM back in...
For the heck of it I tried the "update-rc" method but it had no effect.
Then I did an "apt-get remove gdm" which sort of worked. except now that no
display manager is starting up I'm getting a pop-up about my graphics
resolution. After I click ok I get another pop-up with a few choices that
include exit to console boot which I must select and click ok.
I don't like to have to deal with the $@$$%#^@#$ mouse until I choose to
startx. What I want is some way to tell this thing to always exit to
console login and NEVER ask again... But there isn't a check box for that.
What do I gotta do to ditch this annoying pop-up? And boot directly to
console login????
