Which version are you using?
Do you have /etc/X11/xorg.conf? What dsiplay card are you using?
How did you 'cripple' the video? 
What do you mean by upgrade?  Move to a newer version (say 9.10 to 10.04) or upgrade the packages already on there.

A bit more info is required to help.
