Hi Adam:

Thanks for the reply. The problem is with gdm. (I can't get much of
anything to work with xdm.)

gdm gives me a nice login window with a menu to select which window
manager to use (as does kdm). The gdm interface has a very nice
Xubuntu theme. (I get nothing but a debian logo and a generic login
dialog box with xdm on a grey stippled background, no functionality,
and the window manager (beryl or vanilla xfce) doesn't work properly
when I log in from the xdm interface.)

So I am assuming Xubuntu is "supposed to" be used with gdm. But I
have nothing to base that on except appearances and a vague memory of
reading this in the docs a few months ago.

I think the root of the problem is that switching users for some
reason is triggering the X-display to restart, so I get an Nvidia
splash screen, etc.

This is more a minor annoyance than a major issue, but it forces the
user to have to reboot, which is bad because the machine is used to
process data with jobs that often take days.

Thanks.

Bill
