when you type "ifconfig" in the terminal does the interface show up
(normally as eth1 or wlan0) ... if so does "sudo iwlist <the interface name
here> scan" give you a display of wifi networks in range (that command
should be entered in the terminal as well)

if not, then we need to work more on getting the hardware functioning.
