I've gone ahead and installed Firestarter and it's running fine. I
realize that the IP tables were already there but Firestarter makes a
good front end to them plus shows any "events". The apt-Synaptic
installation was painless and got the init scripts in place so it's
running as a service when I boot the laptop. However, XU's
service-admin (Services) doesn't see Firestarter and while bum
(Boot-Up Manager) sees Firestarter as a service it can't tell whether
it's running (shows a "?"), but iptables -L gives a list of rules so
I assume all is well.

I have not yet convinced sudo/sudoers to let me start Firestarter
without a password nor managed to get XFCE to start it automatically
but that will come later when I have more time.

John
