personally, i wouldn't try with a system with less than 128mb RAM, even 
though the installation (with the alternate CD) should work with 64mb.

still lighter distros you may try:
-puppy linux
-feather linux
-damn small linux

(i don't have personal experience with those).

but why not give Xubuntu a try, and report here how it went? we are 
always eager for testers, in order to  keep the "minimun reqs" paragraph 
accurate on this page:
