[xubuntu-users] Force XU Edgy Desktop install to use 2.4 kernel? (SOLVED - sort of)

Because the Toshiba Portege 3490CT would lock up when using Dapper but
would run when using Arch with a 2.4 kernel I thought the issue was
using a 2.4 kernel versus a 2.6 kernel. However, I later installed
Breezy, thinking it was based on a 2.4 kernel, and everything ran
fine. After I installed it I discovered that it was using a 2.6.12
kernel (couldn't tell which kernel it was using during the
installation process). So I'm at least up to 2.6.12 and the laptop
is very stable.
I have not yet discovered why the Portege locks up after installing
either Edgy or Dapper.
Breezy installed a very lean basic system without any desktop
environment. I was then able to install XFCE4 (4.2) and am on my way
with a pseudo-Xubuntu system with a more recent kernel than I
expected.
