[xubuntu-users] vim syntax on

I am using vim 7.0.35 on Xubuntu 6.10 with kernel 2.6.17-11-generic.

I found that "syntax on" command doesn't work on vim. I tried it from
both inside .vimrc as "set syntax on" and "syntax on" and also from inside
vim as ":syntax on" and ":set syntax on". It says: "Sorry, the command
is not available in this version"

Any help would be appreciated.
