Failed Upgrade, Problems with CUPS

Good morning,

as a beginner of Linux, I tried yesterday to upgrade xubuntu 6.06 to 
version 6.1 and was unable to do so and got the following message:

could not calculate the upgrade var/log/dist.upgrade, what can I do to 
upgrade the version 6.06?

I further try already for days, to get my printer installed under Cups, 
I get not problem with it, its a Canon JC85, until I am asked to give 
the username and the password, whenever I state the two, which I use for 
the system, Cups rejects it and I do not get any further.

To install this systems is awfully hard, I am playing about with my IBM 
Laptop which was running before on Windows 98 already for days, and I 
cannot tell you what I encountered.

Hopefully you can help me, otherwise I think I give it up and stay with 
windows.
