I had an issue similar to that when I upgraded to Feisty (only the crash on
switch to console, not the screensaver) and it was fixed by running:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
in the command line, apparently there was just some random parameter that
was hanging around in the xorg.conf that needed to be removed and that
command automatically replaced it and all has been well since. Hope that
helps
