I agree vlc is a nice app, though I use mplayer, which I guess is not a 
choice due to its dependence on w32codecs.

I hate xmms :) so something on GTK+ based on/similar to Qoud Libet code 
but not Gnome dependant would be good (Listen, exaile etc)

xfmedia will never evolve enough I guess or at least not in near future. 
It is a good lite but very simple media player.
