I have a similar problem using smplayer. Whenever I access the menu bar
or change the volume (notify-osd) the screen flickers and the desktop is
shown. When the option "redirect fullscreen windows" in compiz settings
is turned of the problem disappears but then I get terrible video
tearing. I am running Ubuntu 9.04 and I am using a nvidia geforce 7300
with the binary driver version "180.44-0ubuntu1".
