I compiled libmapi myself so that I could look at the symbols. It does
look like debug_level is undefined in libmapi:

aaron at amcirillo-linux:~$ objdump -t /usr/lib/libmapi.so.0|grep debug_level
00000000       O *UND*	00000000              debug_level


I'm not sure where this symbol is supposed to be defined
