It works now. The solution was to uninstall the brother-packages and to reinstall them:
1. Delete the brother printer in printer settings
2. sudo apt-get purge brother-*
3. sudo apt-get install brother-lpr-drivers-laser
4. Reinstall the printer in printer settings

       Status: New => Invalid
