Bingo.

On my i965 system, after reproducing the freezes yesterday, I downgraded
to mesa 7.3 (and nothing else), left it running overnight, and have seen
no freezes since.

To confirm, please downgrade these packages; you may still have them in
your /var/cache/apt/archives/, else you can get them off
packages.ubuntu.com.

If my theory is correct, you'll have no further freezes after installing
these packages.
