Since nobody from the Kubuntu team has responded, I went and tested this
out. There were some errors in my patch that caused a build failure, but
once I fixed that it all seems to work perfectly. I've pushed a Bazaar
branch corresponding to this change, and will file a merge request for
that; I've also uploaded this to Jaunty.
