Not sure I entirely agree with that last statement - the Windows afflicted
will inevitably need Samba. Even though scp and other protocols are readily
available and quite easy to use, there are only so many times an admin can
explain the difference to their users before murdering someone.

Technically, you don't need it. But emotionally it is sometimes the
smoother option. :-(

Anyway setting up Samba does require a bit of effort. So if someone has
installed it on Linux I imagine they had a pretty good reason for doing so.
I also think there should be a reasonable expectation that Samba is secure.
Not secure enough that I would ever allow access through the firewall, mind
you.
