Hi Jan,
First point of interest would be finding out what failed in the
upgrade. Luckily apt keeps a file of the upgrade output for us!
Grab the last 10K from the output file:
> sudo tail -c +10 /var/log/apt/term.log
You can even do this in a tty if using the enlarged GUI is difficult -
press CTRL-ALT-F1 and log in at the tty.
tip: The log file is meant for root eyes only as it contains the
versions of system services, and knowing versions is one way intruders
target known vulnerabilities - anyway ...
Redirect that output to a file for easier viewing and scan through it
for the errors and let us know what you find. Maybe if we can resolve
those we can restore your wife's machine back to normal :)
Also include the 'lspci' output so we can see what hardware lives in
that box.
P.S. since your network interface is also down, chances are we
may need to download the driver from another machine and manually
install it to get internet up again. But cross that bridge when we get
there.
