Good morning Jan,

I am not sure with what you mean "myriad of selections".  In terms of
upgrading, use the command line perhaps try

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -f

Dist-upgrade upgrades everything and the -f switch tells it to attempt to
fix broken upgrades.  I included update because it's better to make sure
you have the newest package lists.
