Hi Quintin
Agreed, but it all comes down to who you are dealing with.
Unfortunately not everything works for everybody.

Yes, but each email client operates individually, it keeps track of the
email it download to ensure it doesn't get downloaded again. An email
downloaded by one client should should not be ignored by another client.

Gmail creates its own set of folders which appears in a separate folder
called "GMail". It contains a bunch of sub folders, e.g. Drafts, Sent
Mail, etc. Its effectively a duplicate of the existing email in the
folders created by Thunderbird. This operates very different from the
POP3 setups in Thunderbird. If you delete an IMAP email, it is tagged
as "deleted" and then moved to the "Trash" folder under "Gmail", and not
in the Trash folder created by Thunderbird. Effectively the folders
created by Thunderbird is ignored. If you have a couple of POP3
accounts and a Gmail account, this very quickly gets confusing because
the operation is inconsistent. I can handle this, but not everyone is
so willing to accept the "weirdness"

Yep, tried that, but the Gmail web interface isn't purely a mail client,
it tries to do other things too, and the new tabbed inbox just adds
complexity. It's operation isn't entirely intuitive. You know how it
is when someone asks you an IT question and simply expect that you
should immediately know the answer, but then you have to sit down and
figure it out while the person glares at you because you can give them a
straight answer. Since the Gmail web interface put me in that spot, I'm
pre-conditioned not to like it. ;-)
