If you are as committed to free culture as I am, Please RSVP for the
upcoming ZA-FREE AGM. We need to take some time to reflect on the
contribution of free culture to South Africa's digital commons and to
appraise some significant victories over the past months. In Cape Town
alone, there are now two major free wifi hubs in the Company Gardens and
Green Point. Telkom, our nemesis, has upgraded its lines and is promising a
second upgrade in speed in November. ISPs have followed suit, offering
upgrades at no extra charge. Google is testing free white spaces in a
number of projects around the country. Richard Stallman of the Free
Software Foundation also gave a talk at UCT hosted by Cape Town Linux Users
Group, we thus have hundreds of projects offering innovative solutions
which do not cost the Earth. There are also a number of challenges
involving attacks against free culture, such as copyright and patent
legislation, online surveillance, lack of access to computers, paucity of
skills and incentives and an over-emphasis on the capitalist mode of
production. This is therefore an opportunity to meet and organise around
issues to do with free culture. If you are a free culture activist or
hacktivist please join our group and share this invitation with your
friends, Yours in Freedom, David Robert Lewis
