[ubuntu-za] OCR on Ubuntu

Is there anybody who can enlighten me about a successful OCR facility on 
Ubuntu 12.04?

I have tried a few times, but with limited or no success. My latest 
attempt was Tesserect, but the system does not even seem to open the 
software, after installing from Synaptic I followed the guidelines in 
Askubuntu and ran

|tesseract imagefile.tif outputfile.txt

|||

and the result was

Tesseract Open Source OCR Engine v3.02 with Leptonica
Cannot open input file: imagefile.tif
