[ubuntu-za] Scribus Problem

It looks like this is a problem with qt-at-spi, a Qt accessibility
package. You can try uninstalling qt-at-spi:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/scribus/+bug/973332
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lyx/+bug/946956

I have qt-at-spi installed, so there must be a way to fix it without
reinstalling. Various related bugs suggest that it may be a problem
with obsolete configuration data in your home directory. You can
verify this by making a new clean user account and trying to use
Scribus from there (you can also try starting it with gksudo -- just
don't keep using it as root!) -- if it works, there must be some cruft
in your home directory breaking things.

Cleaning up old settings is a bit of a pain. If you want to attempt
it, I would suggest this:

1) move all the invisible files and directories in your home directory
to a new directory
2) list all the files and copy really obvious things you know you need
back out; e.g. .ssh, .mozilla (if you use Firefox), .bash* ...
3) carry on using your computer. If you open an application and
discover that its settings are gone, either redo them (if it's easy to
do) or find out what directory or file stores the settings and use it
to replace the freshly created one (quit the application first).
4) in a few months' time you can probably assume that you don't need
any more of the old settings, and delete the directory.

This may all be too much trouble to go to if you have no use for
qt-at-spi and don't mind uninstalling it.

Good luck,
