I agree.  I've had similar issues but usually with individual packages, 
not the index file for the whole archive.  To resolve the problem I 
usually just deleted the package file (.deb) under 
/var/cache/apt/archive.  In your case the problem appears to be bigger.

I would suggest commenting out the archive in question in your 
/etc/apt/source.list file, doing an update, uncomment and update again.  
This might remove the problem.

The problem must revolve around something in either or /var/cache/apt or 
/etc/apt directory... I think.
