I would reinstall hplip from hplipopensource.com/ but I've noticed that 
it is rather tricky in 12.04. Also, to install printers afterwards you'd 
most likely need to run hp-setup as root (plugin download problem when 
running as normal user). Maybe a more experienced user can assist you 
remotely through TeamViewer (it does work on Linux) ?
