My thunderbird seems to bring my computer to a halt every now and then. 
It usually happens when I'm watching a movie and browse the web at the 
same time while thunderbird is open. I only have POP accounts and auto 
compact was enabled. I've disabled it and hopefully it will solve my 
problem as well. Thanks for the tip Jan. :)
