Hi Robin,
I can understand your frustration :(
Ubuntu is still a Gnome based distro, it is indeed using Gnome 3... the
difference is that rather than using Gnome-shell it is using Unity as
the interface you see and interact with.
Lots of issues that people have with Ubuntu stems from Gnome and not
from things like Unity or other decisions made my Canonical etc.
I don't have an easy fix or answer to your dilemma about open source...
