Hi Percy.

In my experience kids are very flexible, and pick up user interfaces in 
their sleep. Just install linux with the native interface. Don't worry 
about differences with Windows - they convert stuff like that without 
even thinking.

All machines in my house run either dual boot or Linux, and the kids use 
Linux by default (their own decision).

My 2c worth.
