Looking in /var/log/dev I find

/var/log/wvdialconf.log:Scanning your serial ports for a modem.
/var/log/wvdialconf.log:Sorry, no modem was detected!  Is it in use by 
another program?

which to me looks like the problem, but how do I fix it?
