Intel's drivers are open source and in the repository. That said, all the
Intel graphics cards I've had have been somewhat buggy.

I don't know if it's the hardware or the drivers, but on my work PC, X
used to crash. I could log in via SSH, and I'd see that the X server or
driver had crashed, and I couldn't restart X and had to reboot the machine.

My church's laptop that we use for data projection also has an Intel
graphics card, and that one can't have a total desktop size of more than
2048x2048. With a display of 1440 wide, I have to make the second screen
(i.e. the data projector) *above* my current screen, and I have to use
xrandr to manually make the laptop display the primary, because the Intel
driver or card automatically makes the VGA output the primary. Argh!!!

If I ever buy a laptop, I'm making darn sure the machine does NOT have an
Intel graphics card.
