Hi Guys
Just want to boast about my "small victory"...
I've been using Ubuntu exclusively for over 2 years now. I tried to
interest my wife in trying it out as well with absolutely no success.
She does not like change.
On Friday her Windows installation crashed again to the extent that a
reinstall would be necessary to fix it. That is despite the fact that
it was running so slowly it took nearly 7 minutes just to boot up and MS
Word took over a minute to open.
She considered several options:
- Getting CD's from Acer to re-install what she had (Win XP + Office
pre-installed)
- Buying Windows 7 and MS Office
- Buying a new laptop and MS Office
At last, getting Ubuntu with Open Office for free and a serious boost in
speed no longer seemed such a "bad" idea. So I finally got the long
awaited go ahead.
I took a spare hard drive:
- installed Ubuntu 10.10,
- transferred all her documents,
- set up her mail in Evolution and imported here Outlook data,
- imported her music with Rhythmbox,
- imported her photos with Shotwell,
- configured her network printer, and
- installed wine (for use later)
The whole process was pretty painless! Must say Ubuntu came a long way
since I started with it! Her old laptop now boots in 30 seconds flat
and OpenOffice opens in seconds. Even both here iPods were detected
straight away with Rhythmbox.
Training was no more than 30 minutes. The only special request was to
change the theme to Clearlooks (default Ubuntu theme was too much for
her).
Thanks to all the guys and gals that work so hard to make Ubuntu great!
Experiences like this makes me proud to be part of Ubuntu.
Regards
Charl
